The APSAC Alert is a digital publication of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
Its purpose is to provide a brief summary of a critical body of empirical research directly informing multidisciplinary
child abuse practice, including professionals who work in mental health, social service, health, and the law.

Mandated Reporting of Child Maltreatment: DevelopmentsRecent high-profile child sexual abuse scandals have provided a new backdrop for discussion of the continued need for and effectiveness of mandated reporting in response to child maltreatment. Such scandals have prompted legislators to revisit and revise their mandated reporting laws. Shortly after the Penn State scandal became public, legislation was introduced to amend the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act to expand mandated reporting. To date, at least ten states have amended their mandated reporting statutes, and proposed legislation is pending in numerous others. These recent actions take place in the broader context of a long-standing debate about the wisdom and efficacy of mandated reporting as a policy prescription.
Los últimos escándalos del perfil alto del abuso sexual de niños han proporcionado un nuevo telón de fondo para discutir la necesidad constante para y la eficaz de la obligación de informar en respuesta al maltrato infantil. Epidemiology of Clergy Sexual Abuse in the U.S. Catholic Church (English Version)Over the past 10 years, the clergy sexual abuse “crisis” was heralded by a series of articles that appeared in the Boston Globe beginning in January 2002, led by emotionally-charged headlines about “scandal and cover-up” and “predator priests”. These investigative reports focused attention not only on the actual cases of sexual abuse but also on how the Archdiocese of Boston handled several instances of sexually abusive contacts between its priests and minors. Most concerning was the growing perception that the perpetrators were transferred between parishes and dioceses after the suspicions of potential abuse had surfaced, and that these reassignments were done without basic safeguards in place to protect the new, unsuspecting communities of children and families that would receive and welcome the abusive priests.
Durante los últimos diez años, el “crisis” del abuso sexual cometido por los cleros fue anunciado por una serie de artículos que se publicaron en el Boston Globe al principio de enero 2002, empezando con unos titulares cargados de emotividad acerca del “escándalo y tapadura” y los “sacerdotes rapaces”. Estos reportes de investigación centraron no sólo en los casos verdaderos del abuso sexual sino en la manera en que manejó el arquidiócesis de Boston varios casos de contacto sexual entre los sacerdotes y los menores. A Message From APSAC's PresidentThis has been an exciting, even exhilarating, 2 years as President of APSAC. Through its 25-year history, APSAC has earned a well-deserved reputation for providing products and services of the highest quality and significance. This is a result of the unique character of its professional multidisciplinary membership and a long a history of special commitment of that membership in governance and development. Partially by design and partially by necessity, the APSAC Board of Directors and its subcommittee infrastructure have historically not been only the nexus of governance for the organization, but have also in a unique way been the professional staff of the organization.
Han sido unos dos años emocionantes, aún estimulantes, como el Presidente de APSAC. Por su historia de 25-años, APSAC se ha ganado una reputación bien merecida por proveer unos productos y servicios de la calidad más alta y significante. Esto es un resultado del carácter único de su membrecía multidisciplinaria y profesional y también de una historia larga de un compromiso especial a la gobernabilidad y al desarrollo por parte de aquella membrecía. En parte a propósito y en parte a necesidad, la junta directiva de APSAC y la infraestructura de su subcomité, históricamente, han sido no sólo el nudo de la gobernabilidad para la organización sino en una manera única, también el personal profesional de la organización.
